In an age where loneliness has become a quiet epidemic, finding a place where you belong can feel like searching for a secret door in the dark. Many people struggle with building new friendships, especially as adults, and too often it feels like there’s no room to simply be yourself.

This is where tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) come in. If you’ve never played one before, think of them as collaborative storytelling mixed with a board game. Instead of competing to win, you sit around a table (or online) with others to create a story together. You become part of a team that overcomes challenges, laughs at absurd situations, and builds a world from imagination.
More Than Just Games
At their core, TTRPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Monster of the Week, Vaesen, and newer titles such as Beyond the Veil are about connection. They give you a reason to meet regularly, a safe space to talk, and a creative outlet that pulls you out of the day-to-day grind.
You don’t need to be a “gamer” or a “writer” to join in. All you need is curiosity. The rules are just there to guide the adventure; the real heart of the game is sitting together and saying, “What happens next?”
A Cure for Loneliness
Playing a TTRPG means you’re never sitting alone with a screen, waiting for a notification that never comes. You’re surrounded by people who want you to be there. Many players say they found their closest friends through these games. Some groups stay together for years, catching up over pizza and dice rolls, with the campaign becoming a kind of anchor in their lives.
When you’re struggling to make friends or feeling disconnected, stepping into a world of shared imagination can be the lifeline you didn’t know you needed.
Belonging Without Barriers
One of the most beautiful things about TTRPGs is that they make room for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re shy, outgoing, a fantasy fan, a sci-fi lover, or someone who’s never rolled a dice in their life. Around the table, you get to belong. You’re part of the group from the very first scene.
Why Not Give It a Go?
The hardest part is often just starting. But once you sit down and join a game, you may find yourself leaving the table with more than just a fun story. You might leave with friends who become part of your life, with inside jokes and memories that stick with you far longer than the dice rolls.
Whether you try the grand adventures of Dungeons & Dragons, the investigative chills of Call of Cthulhu, the episodic mysteries of Monster of the Week, the folklore-soaked tales of Vaesen, or the supernatural investigations of Beyond the Veil, the result is the same: connection, creativity, and belonging.
So if you’ve ever felt on the outside, if you’ve ever struggled to find your people, maybe it’s time to pull up a chair, grab some dice, and discover just how much a game can change your life.
Where to Find People to Play With
Here’s a list of places you can start your search. Some are UK-focused, others global. Use them to post “looking for group” (LFG) messages or browse existing groups:
Tips for Reaching Out & Joining
When you post or message, be clear about where you are (town, region), which game(s) you’d like to try, and your experience level (beginner is totally fine!).
Try one-shots first, many groups run intro or single-session adventures so you can test it out.
Be patient and try several groups. Not every group will click right away, and that’s okay.
Ask current players if they know of other groups, word of mouth is powerful.
If possible, visit your local games / hobby store and see if they host RPG nights or have a noticeboard.
