One of the most common questions we were asked at Tabletop Scotland this year was: “Is Beyond the Veil suitable for children?” Hot on its heels came the follow up: “Just how much horror is in Beyond the Veil?”
Both questions get to the heart of what we have built with Beyond the Veil, and the answer is simple: yes, the game is suitable for younger players, and the level of horror is entirely up to you.
Recommended Age: 7+
We officially recommend the game for ages 7 and up. At its core, Beyond the Veil is a supernatural mystery roleplaying game where players work together to investigate strange events, uncover secrets, and solve mysteries. That means the emphasis is always on teamwork, problem solving, and story rather than on violence or fear.
How Scary Do You Want It?
The tone of your game is fully adjustable, making it as light hearted or as spine tingling as you prefer. For example:
Want something family friendly? Think Scooby Doo or Ghostbusters. Quirky characters, plenty of laughs, and a mystery to solve.
Want something with a little more edge? Lean into Supernatural, Stranger Things, or The X Files. Strange creatures, darker themes, and that delicious chill of the unknown.
The system has been designed so you can dial the horror up or down depending on your group.
Made With Families in Mind
When we first set out to design Beyond the Veil one of our goals was to create a game we could play with our own children and use as a gateway into the tabletop roleplaying hobby. Between us we have kids ranging from a few months old right up to 18 years old, and it was important to us that the game could work for families as well as seasoned groups. Whether you are introducing your children to their first mystery or gathering a group of teenagers for a Stranger Things style investigation, Beyond the Veil is designed to welcome them in.
Stories for Every Table
At the end of the day, Beyond the Veil is about choice. If your table wants a Saturday morning cartoon mystery, you can play that way. If your group prefers blood, shadows, and creeping dread, you can do that too. The game thrives on flexibility, which means it grows with your players whether they are just starting out in tabletop roleplaying games or are seasoned investigators ready to stare into the abyss.
