On a quiet, affluent street in Mayfair stands a Georgian townhouse like any other. Or so it seems. But for those in the know, 50 Berkeley Square is more than just a relic of the 18th century. It is the beating heart of the Supernatural & Paranormal Society, known simply as the SPS.
For well over a century, this seemingly ordinary building has been the launch point for countless investigations into the strange, the unexplained, and the terrifying.

The Founding of the Supernatural & Paranormal Society
The Society began life in 1885 at the height of the Victorian spiritualist movement. It was originally established by two men: Dr. Albert Williams, a sceptical physician and academic, and Dr. John Alexander, also a physician and academic. Both were fascinated by the growing number of séances, ghost sightings, and claims of spirit communication sweeping across England.
At first, their aim was to debunk fraudulent mediums and charlatans, providing scientific rigour to an increasingly unscientific craze. But everything changed when they encountered Amelia Gabriel, a medium who revealed information she couldn’t possibly have known. Details that would later be confirmed through extensive investigation.
This experience marked a turning point. Rather than disproving the supernatural, the Society began investigating it. With a growing network of scholars, mystics, explorers, and former military personnel, the SPS transitioned from academic scepticism to cautious belief.
50 Berkeley Square: A Hidden Powerhouse
Officially, the townhouse is listed as a private residence. But behind its discreet façade lies one of the most advanced supernatural research institutions in the world. Over the decades, the interior has been extensively renovated to include:
A vast occult archive in the basement, housing relics, cursed artefacts, and banned tomes
Secure briefing rooms for field agents, including reinforced wards and protection circles
A small, unmarked public shopfront at the entrance simply called The Supernatural & Paranormal Society, where the curious might purchase charms, trinkets, or receive guidance
Every corner of the HQ hums with history. From the creaking staircase where a ghostly child is said to appear, to the fourth-floor attic sealed since 1923 for reasons never publicly disclosed, 50 Berkeley Square is as mysterious as the things it investigates.
Wartime Wisdom: The Legacy of Bertram Tealeaf
One of the most enduring figures in SPS history is Bertram Tealeaf, a portly, short-statured gentleman who led the Society through its most perilous decades.
Appointed as Head Overseer in 1916, Bertram’s tenure stretched from the First World War, through the Second, and into the uncertain years that followed. During these tumultuous decades, he transformed the SPS into a more agile, tactical organisation capable of handling not only spiritual crises but military-grade anomalies.
Though often underestimated due to his stature and his fondness for jam scones, Bertram possessed a brilliant strategic mind. He kept the SPS both secret and essential, and his journals remain required reading for high-level recruits to this day.
From the Past to the Present
Today, the SPS handles over 5 million reports annually, with branches in nearly every continent. While 50 Berkeley Square remains its spiritual and administrative core, modern technology, psychic surveillance, and interdimensional fieldwork have redefined the scope of its operations.
Despite technological progress, the essence of the Society hasn’t changed. It still stands for truth, vigilance, and balance in a world that teeters between the known and the unknowable.
Visiting the SPS… If You’re Invited
The general public will never know the true purpose of 50 Berkeley Square. Those drawn into its halls are usually brought there by fate, fear, or both.
But for those rare few who earn entry, the message etched on the brass plaque inside the foyer says it all:
“We do not chase ghosts. We chase answers.”
Uncover the Truth. Survive the Unknown.
