Printing with Purpose: Sustainable TTRPG publishing

At Wrenegade Studios, we're not just storytellers, we’re also caretakers. As creators of immersive worlds like Beyond the Veil, we know that every choice we make in the physical world impacts the one we live in. That’s why we’re committed to keeping our production practices as sustainable as possible, without compromising on quality or creativity.

When it came time to print the Beyond the Veil: Prologue, we partnered with the team at YouLovePrint, a UK-based CarbonNeutral® company that shares our vision for a greener future. Instead of choosing the cheapest option or the fastest turnaround, we made a conscious decision: both the cover and interior pages were printed on recycled paper. It cost a little more, but for us, it was worth every penny.

Why? Because this isn’t just a one-off decision, it’s part of our studio’s ongoing promise to sustainable TTRPG publishing and to minimise our impact on the planet.

YouLovePrint’s eco-conscious ethos aligns beautifully with our own. Their facilities follow internationally recognised environmental management systems, including the prestigious ISO 14001 certification, which means they’re not just talking about sustainability, they’re putting systems in place to make it happen. Over 99% of their dry waste is diverted from landfill, and they offer tailored print runs so customers only print what they need. This eliminates waste and makes small-batch printing a viable, eco-friendly choice for indie creators like us.

They’re also FSC® certified and members of Sedex, the ethical supplier register. Perhaps most impressively, they’ve won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development three times. With initiatives like Carbon Balanced Paper, supported by the World Land Trust, they help offset emissions in meaningful, global ways.

But our sustainability efforts don’t stop at the page. When we needed tote bags for the UK Games Expo, we chose ones made from recycled material. Because every product we make, whether it’s a rulebook, a character sheet, or a piece of merch, should reflect the values we hold behind the scenes.

Our goal is simple: create unforgettable games while doing as little harm to the environment as possible. Choosing recycled materials, reducing waste, and working with like-minded suppliers are all part of that mission. We hope that by taking these small steps, we can inspire other creators and players to do the same.
