Who are we

We are Just your typical nerds, a family who bonded over tabletop RPGs and video games and have forged an unbreakable bond over three decades of shared adventures. Together.

Our journey began in the scenic landscapes of rural Yorkshire, UK, at a place affectionately known as "The Farm." It was here that we first immersed ourselves in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, sparking a lifelong passion for collaborative storytelling and gameplay.

As time has marched on and life has led us down different paths, we now find ourselves spread across the country, each with our own families. However, our love for gaming persists, and we've come together online, forming a close group – "The Digital Farm" in memory of our old hangout.

With the same spirit of adventure that defined our early gaming days, we continue to explore new frontiers, share laughter, and create unforgettable memories. Through the power of digital connectivity, we bridge the physical distance, coming together to embark on epic quests, unravel mysteries, and engage in thrilling battles—all from the comfort of our own homes.

The Digital Farm - Wrenegade Studios

How and why did we start Wrenegade Studios?

Wrenegade Studios team

After immersing ourselves in a 6-year campaign of Dungeons & Dragons 5e, our gaming group needed a brief break from sorcery and combat. We set out in search of new gaming adventures to inject a fresh vibe into our weekly digital farm nights. While exploring the gaming landscape and proposing various game ideas, a surprising pattern emerged—a lack of options that truly matched our needs. Before we knew it, we had a growing list of game concepts that were conspicuously absent from the market.

And then, a brilliant idea struck us—why not bring these games to life ourselves? In December 2020, Alex and Paul embarked on a research journey that would shape our very first tabletop role-playing game— “Beyond the Veil.”

As we delved deeper into the concept of crafting a game that could be experienced both in the virtual and physical realms, we found ourselves unravelling the intricacies of the game industry. Weeks of dedicated brainstorming ensued and eventually we birthed our own game development company—Wrenegade Studios.

At Wrenegade Studios, driven by our passion for exceptional narrative driven gaming experiences, "Beyond the Veil" stands as our flagship project. We're dedicated to delivering quality, fostering innovation, and building a community where camaraderie thrives.

Why choose Wrenegade Studios as your name?

In our quest to find the perfect name for our game development company, we spent weeks tossing names back and forth. We wanted a name that would resonate across genres, embracing the diverse range of games we had planned.

During this process, we stumbled upon a name—a name that held deep personal meaning to our team. The concept of “Wrenegade Studios” was born, a name that meant something to all three of us.

Alex and Paul, the brothers of our team, had a soft spot for the tiny Wren bird as a tribute to their late father, who held a special fondness for Britain's smallest bird and had made it the logo for his woodworking business, which he ran alongside his brother.

Adding to the significance, Dan, named his firstborn child Wren, endearingly referring to them as “Wrenegade.”

So after weeks of searching and brain bashing it was decided that we would be known as "Wrenegade Studios".

Weaned on D&D, Warhammer, and novels set in the Forgotten Realms or Krynn, Alex stood no chance. Now the archetypal nerd with an RPG obsession, he has embraced his fate and is at peace.

Naturally, he developed a keen appreciation for statistics and data analysis which has served him well, both professionally and, more importantly, in developing the core mechanics for Beyond the Veil. Now he spends way too much time running simulations and crunching numbers than is healthy for a married man and father of three, but games don’t make themselves… no matter how hard you wish for it!

As an ‘Ever DM’ the chance to tailor an entire rules system to his will was one Alex simply could not pass up.

“General hanger-on and cheerleader. Also knows some stuff about marketing”

Dan, cousin to brothers Paul & Alex, first encountered TTRPGs through the 1st Ed Red Box D&D, back in the day. Most memorable event included a PC death due to an innocent exploding cucumber. More recently, four (count them), four consecutive natural 1s led to my 5e Bard accidentally killing our party’s obnoxious Dwarf Fighter. It’s the least he deserved.

Dan is much less involved in the development of ‘Beyond the Veil’ than the brothers, but leans in to the project in many ways.

Paul is the eldest of the team and therefore should know better, but as time has told… he doesn’t!

The “creative” one of the bunch and the one that comes up with random ideas, mechanics and rules at 3am in the morning and drops them on everyone the next morning for them to work out the “finer details”.

Paul is an award winning artist & Illustrator who dabbles in graphic design, website development, video production and day dreaming, although self taught in all of them.

Paul’s rogue was also the recipient of the exploding cucumber!
